Do I need a visa to visit Japan as a US citizen in 2024?

I am a US citizen planning a two-week trip to Japan next spring. Do I need to apply for a visa before traveling, or can I enter visa-free? I have heard about the Visit Japan Web system but I am not sure if that replaces a visa or is just for immigration. Also, are there any new requirements or changes for 2024 that I should be aware of?

Good news - US citizens do not need a visa for short tourist visits to Japan (up to 90 days). You get a visa-free entry stamp on arrival. However, there are a few requirements: 1. You need a valid US passport with at least 6 months validity remaining. 2. You need a return ticket or onward ticket showing you will leave Japan within 90 days. 3. You must complete the Visit Japan Web immigration and customs form before arrival. This is not a visa - it is an electronic immigration form that speeds up your entry process. 4. As of 2024, Japan also requires presenting your Visit Japan Web QR code at immigration. I recommend completing this 1-2 weeks before your trip. 5. No vaccination requirements currently for US citizens entering Japan. The whole process is straightforward. I traveled to Japan last month and the Visit Japan Web system made immigration very quick - I was through in about 15 minutes at Narita.
