Can I get compensation for a delayed flight over 3 hours?

My flight was delayed by over 4 hours and I missed a connecting flight. The airline rebooked me but I arrived 5 hours late to my destination. Am I entitled to any compensation? The delay was due to a mechanical issue, not weather. I have heard about EU261 compensation for European flights but this was a domestic US flight. What are my rights in the US for a significantly delayed flight?

In the US, there is no federal law requiring airlines to compensate passengers for delayed flights, unlike in the EU where EU261 mandates compensation. However, you still have some rights: 1. If your flight is significantly delayed (3+ hours), you are entitled to a refund of your ticket if you choose not to fly. The Department of Transportation requires airlines to offer this. 2. If the delay causes you to miss a connection and you arrive 3+ hours late to your destination, you can request compensation for meals and reasonable expenses. Keep all receipts. 3. For mechanical delays (airline fault), you have a stronger case. Ask the airline for meal vouchers for delays over 3 hours, hotel accommodation if overnight, and compensation in the form of travel credits or miles. 4. File a complaint with the Department of Transportation at transportation.gov/airconsumer. Airlines take DOT complaints seriously and will often offer compensation to resolve them. 5. Check your credit card travel protections - many premium travel cards like Chase Sapphire or Amex Platinum cover delays over 6 hours with up to $500 for meals and lodging. 6. If the delay was over 4 hours due to mechanical issues, write to customer relations (not just customer service) and specifically request compensation. I have received $200-400 in travel credits this way.
