How do I get a refund from Expedia for a cancelled hotel booking?

I had to cancel a hotel booking I made through Expedia and I am trying to get my money back. The hotel itself was prepaid and non-refundable but I had a genuine emergency. Has anyone successfully gotten a refund from Expedia in a similar situation? How long did it take and what steps did you follow? I have already contacted customer service but I keep getting different answers.

Getting a refund from Expedia for a hotel booking can be frustrating but here is what worked for me: 1. First, check the cancellation policy on your booking confirmation. If it says free cancellation, you should get a full refund automatically within 7-10 business days. 2. If it is non-refundable, call Expedia customer service at 1-800-EXPEDIA (1-800-397-3342). Be polite but firm. Explain your situation and ask if they can make an exception. 3. Ask Expedia to contact the hotel on your behalf. Expedia acts as the middleman and the hotel has to approve the refund. Sometimes Expedia can negotiate with the hotel even for non-refundable bookings. 4. If the first agent says no, call back and speak to a different agent. You will get different answers from different representatives. 5. If you paid by credit card and Expedia refuses, file a dispute with your credit card company citing the emergency situation. Many credit cards have trip cancellation protection built in. 6. As a last resort, file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. Companies often respond more quickly to BBB complaints.
